The Damn News - Our Weekly Newsletter

XXX Brand RED ...Cabernet Sauvignon from California

is sinfully delicious. Brimming with flavors of blackberries, licorice and currants. This California blend comes together in full force to create a very fruity, smooth, big-tasting red....ask Eleni, Monty or Jerry about it!  Unbelievable ...drinks like it should be $20+!

A lovely Cab blend that has been aging away in the bottle since 2002....a must try with grilled meats

A deep dark color. A strait forward cherry nose evolves into more sophisticated plum and spicy roses aromas. In mouth the vibrant blackberry gives a nice frame to the well structured and round body. Soft tannins come along to linger with the mocha driven berry flavors on the finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot

Very popular in last weeks blind tasting they are an incredible value!

Inspired by his travels through the Tuscan countryside, winemaker Michael Pozzan proudly presents his classic creation, DANTE, named after his eldest son. These hearty but approachable wines are reminiscent of your favorite trattoria in Italy. As rich in character as the Italian landscape, so too is the DANTE wine collection.

One of the great bargains in the Best Damn Wine Store in Grand Junction!

Diseño Malbec 2006 has deep purple color with crimson luster. The bouquet
of lilac and cherry blossom unfolds to a hint of tobacco. The explosive
flavors of earthy blueberry and rich chocolate are fleshy yet robust with
well balanced acidity - quintessential Malbec from Mendoza.

Autograph, Trumps and Piping Shrike make Cimicky one of our most popular winemakers....

@ 90 points it's a steal!

"Winemaker Charles Cimicky has fashioned a terrific value from 100% Shiraz aged in old American hogsheads and smaller French barrels. It is another example of what can be achieved by top quality wine making in the Barossa’s finest viticultural areas. This 2006 Shiraz exhibits a deep ruby/purple color along with superb blackberry, spice box, pepper, and cedar characteristics. Full-bodied, opulent, and fleshy, this hedonistic offering should be enjoyed over the next 3-4 years."
-The Wine Advocate

One of the bottles I pull off the shelf when I'm in the mood for white wine...I love the stuff...Uncle Jerry

Rated: 91 Sep/Oct 07 stephen Tanzer's Int. Wine Cellar ......Hazy yellow. Spicy tangerine and pear scents are complicated by honeysuckle, quinine and ginger. Zesty citrus and green apple flavors are refreshing, biting and focused. This dry, stony, very persistent albarino is uncompromising in structure but packed with fruit too.

Husch Chardonnay Mendocino 2006

This estate Chardonnay is fruit forward and very food friendly. Aromas of crisp Bosc pear, Red Delicious apples, citrus blossom and lemon zest intermingle with the modestly restrained bouquet notes of toasted oak, vanilla, nutmeg and hints of clove. On the palate, fruit reflecting the nose abounds with the additional suggestion of stone fruit. A full round mouth-feel and balanced acidity ensure successful food and wine pairing across a range of cuisine, especially grilled fish or grilled chicken topped with our Tomatillo Sauce.

Mesta Tempranillo 2007

Deliciously fruit-driven bouquet shows notes of raspberry and strawberry with a hint of spice and smoky leather. On the palate, the wine is full and ripe with concentrated flavors of black cherry fruit and smooth tannins balanced by bright acidity.

Clos La Chance Zinfandel Central Coast

"Wild black berry and raspberry fruit aromas along with rose oil, bottle brush with a hint of dill. Blueberry and blackberry jam flavors, touches of red cherry, sweet vanilla and oak spice on the finish. Fruit for the 2005 Buff-Bellied Zinfandel is sourced 100% from the Clos LaChance Estate Vineyard in San Martin, from 7-year-old vines. Food pairing: Penne with Peppered Chicken and Spicy Sausage, Moussaka (Lamb, Eggplant and Feta Cheese Casserole), Aztec Chocolate Mousse (Chocolate Mousse with Chile Powder)."

Layer Cake Shiraz 2008

Layer Cake is an ode to Jayson Woodbridge’s grandfather who always told him that the ‘soil where wine is grown is like a Layer Cake, layered with mocha, chocolate, hints of spice and rich, always rich.’ He’s brought to market a ‘wine of value’ with exceptional quality through hand crafting and cutting yields per acre by half if not more. Always the Maverick, it appears, once again, that Woodbridge has raised the bar by raising the standards for a wine priced under $20. To know the man means the price of the wine will never dictate his passion. Jayson was not pleased with the quality of the 2007 vintage, so made the decision not to tarnish the reputation of the brand and skipped making the wine in 2007. According to Jayson, the 2008 vintage is ‘Unmistakably Shiraz; the nose is best described as pure, unobstructed by excessive oak. Dark, dense and creamy, aromas of anise, tobacco, and mocha emerge from the glass. An explosion of dark berry, black cherry, exotic spices and chocolate fill the mouth.’

Gargiulo Vineyards Aprile 2005

Okay, we're biased. We adore gorgeous, outrageous April Gargiulo who loves sharing her Sangiovese-based wine almost as much as she loves dressing up for Halloween. (Don't even ask about her 2008 costume!) Of course she does have the advantage of owning (with her Mom & Dad) two of the most fabulous vineyards anywhere (Neighbors: Screaming Eagle, Rudd, Plumpjack). A fun, feisty hoot of a red. USA

2007 Atalaya from Spain 91 Points

91 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is the first release of Atalaya. The is a blend of Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, and other red grapes. The wine was aged for eight months in French and American oak. This purple-colored wine has an expressive bouquet of violets, spice box, leather, game, blueberry, and black cherry. On the palate it comes off as borderline kinky and definitely sexy with lots of easy-going flavor, superb depth, complexity, and a 45-second finish. Although it can be enjoyed now, it will evolve for another 2-3 years." (08/08) 90 points from Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Inky purple. Spicy dark berries and cherry on the nose, with strong black cardamom and cumin qualities. Candied blackberry and rose flavors are gently firmed by soft tannins and pick up a peppery note with air. Suave and immediately accessible, with very good finishing sweetness and cling.

Killer Bottle ...divine nose, luscious fruit, soft tannins!!!

Paso a Paso Tempranillo La Mancha
From the hand harvested Tempranillo grapes selected from the best vines to be found in La Mancha to the hands-on diligence of the wine maker, Paso A Paso receives the extra care and attention that a fine wine deserves. Careful vineyard selections, long, slow fermentation and macceration followed by gentle aging for six months in French oak combine to create a wine with the optimum balance of fruit, spices and robust aromas. Once in the hands of the consumer they will find that the wine compliments many dishes from winter hearty stews to barbecues.

Everyone always enjoys this Riesling it's not too sweet

it goes well with spicy foods and cheese!

A big hit in our tasting!

Made from vines between 35 and 50 years of age this Grenache-Syrah blend delivers the fruit bomb goods at a price that encourages case purchases. This is not a wine to ponder in your finest stems but gulp from water glasses with pizza or hamburgers.

RICOSSA Barbera d’Asti 2005

Hauntingly rustic with good classic Barbera aromas and flavours. Fresh red berries-cherries and raspberries, tobacco, dark flowers, earth and smoked sausage aromas. Sour cherry, earth and herbs in the mouth. Chewy with bright acidity and soft tannins. Excellent value!

A steal. Drinks like a $25-30 bottle!!!!

Contrada Ragabo Nero D'Avola 2006

We sold 30 cases in 2 months last time we found this and we located 20 more!

One of the best bottles under $15 we have ever had in the store! On the palate this wine emits stewed fruit with light flavored notes of gentle fruit in the finish. Breathing it, there is a touch of earthiness with sour cherry notes and finishes very nicely with a solid fruit finish.

Ledgewood Creek

2006 PicniQue Red Cuvee

I can’t help but reminisce of my trips to Southern France when I drink this wine. The bright, fresh red aromas of cherry and plum lead to flavor… flavor… flavor! Balanced tannins and a smooth fruit forward taste allow the grapes in this wine to harmoniously express themselves from bouquet to the palate’s last lingering moment. What a fabulous everyday drinking wine!

2006 PicniQue Chardonnay

Here’s the story… we set out to make a high quality, affordably priced California Chardonnay and we did just that. It’s balanced and complex with classic Chardonnay flavor. No pretentions; just a really enjoyable, clear expression of Chardonnay from our 20 year old vineyards. By keeping the goal simple we over-achieved. You will know exactly how good it is from your first sip to your last.

Vina Mayor ... Ribero Del Duero
Gran Reserva 1999

This round red is maturing nicely, with tobacco, spice and plum flavors.  It's balanced, with firm tannins and fresh acidity.  The tobacco and spice notes linger on the finish.

This wine is an exclusive at Crossroads b
ecause we bought everything that was available!

A lot of our favorite wine geeks have been asking for this....

The Prisoner

2006 Red Wine

The 2006 blends the lush berry flavors of Zinfandel(51%), the power and concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon (23%), the dark black fruit of Syrah (12%), the intensity and structure of Petit Sirah (6%), the flesh of Charbono (6%) and a hint of Grenache (2%) - all combined for a decadent wine with great complexity.

Last vintage was #17 on Wine Spectator top 100.

Tres Picos Back in Stock 2006 Vintage

I believe I read it received a 90 Pt. rating from the Wine Advocate

to go with last years placement on the WS TOP 100 List .

Robert Parker, Jr. has referred to this 100% old-vine Garnacha in past vintages as "cherry pie in a glass" with deep ruby color, aromas and flavors of kirsch liquer, licorice, garrigue, and plums. The grapes for this wine were harvested from vineyards that cling to rugged terrain on the slopes of the famous Moncayo Mountain with low yields of less than 2 tons per acre.

Foxglove Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are spectacular values.  The Chard is styled like good Burgundy.  While the Cabernet exhibits a sophisticated structure and intense dark fruit flavors.  Both drink like bottes that would cost $20 or more!

Our Small Vineyards Import Order is in! Monty, John Lowey (former Lord and Master of Texas' largest and best known winery, Llano Estacado near Lubbock and who we are so lucky to have helping us during the weekend tastings) and I had the pleasure of attending a tasting a few months back where we got to preview some incredible wine from Italy.  These are all spectacular values so whatever the price we have set at retail you can be sure that you will be drinking several quality levels better!  Enjoy!

From one of our favorite Winemakers!

New in the store!!!!

CG Di Arie's Amador Zin

The style of wine is fully extracted with fruit forward, good balance, a complex mid-palate and a long lingering finish. This Zinfandel meets all the criteria of my style of wine. It is well balanced with deep color and typical varietal flavor and aroma. The black cherry flavors progress in the mid-palate to blackberry and plum and the bold finish of chocolate lingers pleasantly long after the wine is consumed.

91 points ...Best Buy

Wine Spectator

Monty, Jerry & Eleni already knew this was a steal after all we sell more Chateau St. Jean than any store on the Western Slope!

Lively and refreshing Fume Blanc offers bright aromas of grapefruit, melon and lemongrass. The Semillon contributes a hint of sweet red apple that combines with the vibrant citrus, fig and spice characters found on the palate, creating a beautifully balanced wine with a long, lingering finish."

Altos De Luzon!

One of the most popular $15-20 bottles of wine in the history of the store! On the Spectator Top 100 list the year before last and a 90 pointer last year it should be back in the store this weekend!  5 cases only!

One of Jerry's favorite Shiraz'! ......is one of the great values in South Australian Shiraz. This super-intense, mouth-staining, and mouth-filling cuvee is all about gorgeously pure black fruits kissed with sweet oak presented in a full-bodied, beautiful, multi layered, textural, hedonistic style. Consume it over the next 3-4 years.

Joel Gott wines are excellent values!  Starting with the Sauvignon Blanc, this collection from California will be a welcome addition to the store!  We get a lot of requests for these wines and so are bringing them in by popular acclaim!  We tasted them earlier in the week and could not be happier to add them to our list!

Big Hit In The Store

The Show is a Cabernet from the three thieves a.k.a. Charles Bieler, Joel Gott, and Roger Scommenga (a.k.a. Scommes).  This is another one of their joint ventures with Trinchero Vineyards who have access to great fruit and the money to do the job right.  You are not hallucinating there are three different labels but they all house the same great Cabernet Sauvignon!

Deep ruby with a purple tint, translucent. Aromas: Black cherry, blackcurrant, vanilla, sweet tobacco and hints of sage flowers. Spicy, moderately tart and medium-bodied, the mouth filling dried red to black fruit and spicy oak flavors lead to a bucking good finish!

Another great patio slammer!

2005 Las Brisas

A super value, the 2005 Las Brisas (a tank-aged blend of 50% Verdejo and equal parts Sauvignon Blanc and Viura) reveals lovely aromas of grapefruit, orange zest, and other assorted citrus. This light-bodied, crisp, fruity 2005 will offer abundant pleasure over the next 9 – 12 months.” Robert Parker 87 points.

It's back! This Friday!

Winner's Tank Langhorne Creek

2006 Shiraz - Langhorne Creek

Very nearly as huge as the last vintage and is a little more developed... lush, opulent the real deal!  Jerry, Eleni and Monty think its better than the 2005!

Black Betty Shiraz ....93 Points WS

"Vibrant, with a distinctive minty note to the aromas and a crisp edge of racy acidity cutting through the ripe, beautifully knit plum, blueberry and cream flavors. Has a supple texture and a long, long finish. Few Barossa Shiraz have this kind of vibrancy. Drink now through 2020.

One of our best summer wines ...Gazela Vinho Verde, from Portugal- Here's a zesty, light and crisp white offering bright lime and pear flavors with subtle spicy notes of ginger and even a hint of tangerine on the lively palate. Pure and clean, this is a truly refreshing wine. {Crisp, Citrus, Pear, Light-bodied}

Monty Jerry and Eleni are wild about Sake!!!

Heavens Door

Moon on the Water

Dreamy Clouds

Garden of Eternity

Wandering Poet

Root of Innocence

We carry an extensive selection of Sake in the store (these are a few of our favorites).  Sake, often called the "Drink of the Gods" by the Japanese, is a beverage created from rice, water, koji, and yeast, usually with an alcohol content of 15%-16%, just slightly higher than that of an average red wine. These are meant to be consumed cold.  Heating any of these lovelies up would be a mortal sin!  Hot Sake is done with the cheapest and least artfully created Sake  Cold Sake was the drink of the Samurai, it is sacred, much like better 100% Agave Tequila which I consider to be euphoric.  It is the drink of choice for athletes looking for a buzz the night before an event because it is the purest, cleanest most easily consumed form of alcohol on the planet (no hang overs). Sake goes well with a lot of different foods, though it tends to get overpowered by very spicy or powerfully flavored foods (as would a fine wine). It DOES go well with sushi, raw oysters, cured fish, salmon/tuna tartare, grilled or broiled fish, fried fish or seafood. paella, mild curries, and many other dishes. It will even work with milder chicken or beef dishes (think light Italian)! As a rule of thumb, if you can drink fine white wine with a dish, then you can also drink premium chilled Japanese sake with it. Want to learn more go to this SAKI LINK!!!

In Store Tasting Schedule

1-6 Friday and Saturday Afternoon

A very popular bottle in the store!!!

Great with pizza, pasta, burgers and steaks!

A Mediterranean styled blend of Tempranillo, Dolcetto, Charbono, Carignane, Valdiquie, Alicante and Mouvedre. Deeply colored in the glass, with a rich and concentrated bouquet sporting big berry aromas with cocoa and spice nuances in the nose. A mélange of red and black fruits cascade within the mouth, awakening the senses with bursts of flavor. Rich and full in body; well structured, with ripe tannins and plenty of sexy appeal. Each lot was fermented separately and barrel aged for six months prior to blending, and is bottled unfined.

One of the best values in the store!!!

Argiolas Costamolino

91 Points R. Parker

The delicate straw color of the 2005 Costamolino Vermentino di Sardegna is followed by beautiful aromas of almonds, oranges, lemon, honey, apple skins, and a hint of tropical fruits. This crisp, elegant, medium-bodied, intense white should be enjoyed over the next year."

Odfjell Vineyards produce the Orzada wines in Maipo Valley, Chile.  ... produce the best possible wines in the vineyards, while maintaining their commitment to sustainable agriculture and "green" winemaking practices in a unique gravity flow winery... 2003 Orzada Cabernet Sauvignon is a perfect example of the distinctive wines that are made at this unique vineyard. It has lots of mocha and vanilla flavors, but plenty of blackberry and cassis fruit to back it up. It is long and ripe on the finish, where a cocoa powder note lingers.

A really nice bottle of wine from Spain!

JUAN GIL MONASTRELL 2004  91 points

Red wine, twelve months in French barrels 100 % Monastrell
We selected the Monastrell grapes for this wine from 40-year old parcels in our estate vineyards. Here shallow, chalky soils on a bed of limestone and rock, combined with an arid climate, produce the low yields (1,8 ton per acre) required for wine of this complexity. After harvesting, the deep purple grapes are whole-cluster macerated “sur lie” for 25 days, and then pressed and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. It is a wine with rich colour, abundant ripe fruit flavours, and a long, spicy, well-balanced finish.
Better drink with roast and game, red grilled and barbecued meat, rice with game, etc.

Jerry likes this Wine so does RP

Wine Enthusiast 90 Points
"Based on Cabernet Sauvignon", this Bordeaux blend shows a lovely structure, and ripe black currant fruit, with toasty oak. Balanced and complex. This is a great price for a Napa Cab of this quality."

Eleni and Monty love this wine!!!

New Bottles

CASALFARNETO Fontevecchia

100% Verdicchio

Probably the best selling wine by the glass at downtown's famous eatery Dolce Vita. The Fontevecchia vineyard production is only about 3000 cases per year. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 6 months before bottling, this wine has a rich, creamy texture and a dry, elegant finish that makes Verdicchio one of the more fuller flavored of all the Italian white wines.

With the first sip, this wine bursts of fresh, dark cherries, blueberries, and sweet cranberry notes. Its velvety mouth-feel is framed with rich vanilla French oak tones and finishes leaving you contemplating blueberries, caramel, and hints of cedar.

Serving Suggestions:

This Malbec is a striking companion to prime rib au jus, eggplant parmigiana, or a flatbread pizza topped in caramelized onions, prosciutto, goat cheese, and fresh herbs.

Great Bottles of Wine!

Hermosa Vineyards

Great wine from the valley!

Kenn Dunn really enjoys his life as a winemaker and vineyard owner is making some of the most popular wines in the valley. All of the Hermosa varietals sell well but his Syrah is by far the favorite among our customers.  Believe it or not he picks barrels that have a cigar note in them to make this wine.  In contrast to make his new desert wine (port) that he calls Rosso he looks for barrels that have a chocolate note to them.   You can fine all the wines he produces in the store but if you would like to taste his wines first Dolce Vita has a good selection that they sell by the glass!
