George Dickel #12 Tennessee Whisky

George Dickel Tennessee Whisky was honored with two Gold Medal Awards in the recent 2006 Tastings.com competition conducted by the Beverage Testing Institute. This is the first competition for George Dickel Barrel Select and the fifth consecutive Gold Medal for George Dickel No.12.

Buttery peanut brittle and subtle latex-like aromas follow through to a supple brisk medium body of dried banana, peanut brittle, and coconut-like oak flavors with a tannic, fruity, honey and roasted cashew fade. A nutty, wild ride of a whisky--quite unique.

Lismore Scotch whisky by William Lundie & Co. is a Speyside Scotch whisky, "robust but delicate" as that goes and as the label says. And though the label clearly states that this is a single malt, there is some debate whether it isn't in fact a blend of several single malts. I can't say I'm overly concerned one way or the other, it's a tasty bargain.

The whisky itself has a raisiny bourbon nose and a nice yellow-amber color. The first taste is like sweet clover honey followed by toffee and floral aromas, almost lost in the heat of what feels like a young whisky. This is one of the few bottles I've been tempted to store in my own mini oak barrel and try again in a year's time. Still as I said it's a decent bargain, especially at $22.99 / .750L or $45.99 / 1.75 L. Very tasty over rocks. I'll be buying this bottle again.

LISMORE LEGEND 21YR SINGLE MALT SCOTCH MATURED IN SHERRY HOGSHEAD BARRELS

You may not have heard about Lismore single malt Scotch whisky. That is a good thing because it is one of the few 21-year-old Scotch whiskys that's actually still at a fair price for a fantastic highly-aged whisky. Not only is the Scotch outstanding, the packaging is top notch with its beautiful decanterstyled bottle and round wood container. The nose opened with tanned leather and smoke tones. The body has notes of maple, toasted oak, cereal and just a light hint of persimmon. The finish lingers with allspice and rhubarb flavors. This is a rich and full-bodied whisky that retains elegance and balance.
